Project meeting - Latvia (February 24th and March 1st)
The last project meeting was held in Rezekne (Latvia) and it involved teachers of all schools of this partnership. The host school, Rezekne Secondary School, prepared various activities, between February 24th and March 1st. At this meetings teachers from all partners participated to the meeting.
On the first day we got to know the local environment and we had an international dinner where the participants were able to share and taste the various culinary specialties of the countries involved in the current partnership.
On February 25 was held in the host school of this project meeting, the welcome ceremony. The ceremony was attended by many extraordinary performances - performed by the students of Rezekne Secondary School - related to the culture of the countries involved in this partnership.
That same day we were greeted by the Deputy Mayor of Rezekne and by the local authority responsible for education. At the hearing, we were explained the work done in the community in various areas, with special focus on education. The Latvians in charge stressed that about 30% of the Rezekne City Council budget is applied in education. The data we were presented with shows that, beyond the inherent logistical of the normal functioning of local schools, the city is strongly committed to offering a broad and diverse range of extracurricular activities, which are free and available to all the students of the local school community.
Later that day, the working meeting between the coordinators of the different countries was held. While this meeting took place, the other participating teachers had the opportunity to visit the University of Applied Sciences of Rezekene. http://www.masterstudies.pt/universidades/Letonia/RHEI-Rezekne/. In this university, where they develop projects related to the timber industry and construction, the teachers visited the chemistry, biology and physics laboratories.
After finishing the meeting project, the host school delighted the other school delegations with a trip to the Latgalia region. This Latvian region has its own language (Latgale), which is still widely used. The region of Latgalia has Catholicism as its predominant religion, although most Latvians integrate the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Both language and religion determine, to a large extent, a different mentality and the existence of strong Latgalian traditions. https://vimeo.com/117154546
The next day we had the opportunity to visit classrooms and spend a morning in the company of a second year class, which offered us a performance involving Portuguese music. In this class we had the opportunity to show a film focusing our island and the functioning of our school. We were then given the opportunity to watch the teaching and learning dynamics of these students. It was both interesting and enriching to observe the working methods used by Latvian teachers.
Afterwards, a second project meeting was held and issues related to the course of this project were addressed. The tasks to be done by schools until the next meeting, that will be held at the end of April in Croatia, were reviewed and updated. During the meeting, we also analyzed, specifically, how each school is being organized and is developing the activities that have been scheduled in this project with their students.
During the afternoon of the same day, we visited the Zeimuls Creative Centre - https://www.facebook.com/Zeimuls/photos_stream?ref=page_internal. This center, located in a modular design builiding (an investment of ten million euros), works as a space where various creative activities are developed. Basically, it works as a space where students of Rezekne City schools develop extracurricular activities, which are free and held in an informal learning environment.
It seems that the education system in Latvia shows great appreciation for the artistic training of students, particularly in areas such as singing, dancing and music. In this center, other activities such as crafts with wood and ceramics, sports activities, sewing and cooking are also developed. It´s important to stress that the school that we visited has four dance and folklore groups working and various choral groups organized by students’ age. Although there are no major differences when compared with the Portuguese education system, the Latvian one shows a strong appreciation of the cultural and artistic component. The Latvian education system invests heavily in a non formal training, which aims to provide the students with various skills that go beyond the formal learning.
On the last day, we engaged in a series of activities that allowed us to enjoy the part of the program dedicated to more cultural activities and we explored the local environment. We visited Ludza, the oldest city in Latvia. In this city we visited the craft center and two churches, one Catholic and one Orthodox. Then we visited the city of Karsava, which is only 13 km from the Russian Federation.
All developed activities were undoubtedly enriching, since they offered us a perception of how other European schools are organized, what the teaching methods are and what activities are developed with the students. The program of this meeting project allowed us to learn new aspects and to experience new situations that surely underpinned our global learning process, which is the essential goal of our project.

Reunião de projeto na Letónia (24 de fevereiro a 01 de março de 2015)
A última reunião de projeto foi realizada em Rezekne (Letónia) e contou com a participação de professores de todas as escolas desta parceria. A escola anfitriã, Rezekne Secondary School, programou, entre os dias 24 de fevereiro e 1 de março, diversas atividades.
No primeiro dia foi realizada uma atividade reconhecimento do meio local e um jantar internacional onde os participantes puderam partilhar as várias especialidades gastronómicas dos países desta parceria.
No dia 25 de fevereiro realizou-se, na escola anfitrião desta reunião de projeto, a cerimónia de boas-vindas. A cerimónia contou com várias e extraordinárias apresentações – realizadas pelos alunos da Rezekne Secondary School - relacionadas com a cultura dos países envolvidos nesta parceria.
Nesse mesmo dia fomos recebidos pelo vice-presidente da Câmara Municipal de Rezekne e pelo responsável pela educação daquela edilidade. Na audiência foi-nos explicado o trabalho feito naquela comunidade em diversas áreas, com especial enfoque na área da educação. Os responsáveis letões fizeram questão de frisar que cerca de 30% do orçamento da Câmara Municipal de Rezekne é aplicado na educação. A análise dos dados que nos foram expostos permite concluir que além da logística inerente ao normal funcionamento das escolas locais, o município aposto fortemente na oferta de um amplo e diversificado leque de atividades extracurriculares, cuja oferta é gratuita e tem um carácter universal no âmbito dos alunos da comunidade escolar local.
Ainda nesse dia, decorreu a reunião de trabalho entre os coordenadores dos diferentes países. Enquanto decorreu esta reunião de trabalho entre os coordenadores, os restantes professores participantes tiveram a oportunidade de visitar a Universidade de Ciências Aplicadas de Rezekene. http://www.masterstudies.pt/universidades/Letonia/RHEI-Rezekne/. Nessa universidade, onde se desenvolvem projetos relacionados com a indústria madeireira e a construção civil, os professores visitaram os laboratórios de química, biologia e física.
Finalizada a reunião de projeto, a escola coordenadora da visita brindou as comitivas escolares presentes com uma reunião à Região da Latgália. Esta região da Letónia possui uma língua própria (o Latgale), que ainda é amplamente utilizada. A região da Latgália tem como religião predominante o catolicismo, embora a maioria dos letões integrem a Igreja Luterana Evangélica. No dia seguinte tivemos a oportunidade de visitar as salas de aula e passar uma manhã na companhia de uma turma do segundo ano, que nos brindou com a atuação de uma música portuguesa. Nesta turma tivemos a oportunidade de apresentar um filme sobre as vivências na nossa ilha e sobre o funcionamento da nossa escola. Foi-nos, assim, dada a oportunidade de observar as dinâmicas de ensino e de aprendizagem destes alunos. Foi interessante e enriquecedor observar os métodos de trabalho utilizados pelos professores letões.
De seguida realizou-se uma segunda a reunião de projeto, onde foram tratados os assuntos relacionados com o decurso deste projeto. Foram revistas e atualizadas as atividades que deverão ser cumpridas pelas escolas até à próxima reunião, que se realizará, no final do mês de abril, na Croácia. Na reunião foi ainda analisada, de forma específica, a forma como cada escola se está a organizar e a desenvolver com os seus alunos as atividades que foram agendadas no âmbito deste projeto.
Durante a tarde deste mesmo dia, visitámos o Centro Criativo de Zeimuls https://www.facebook.com/Zeimuls/photos_stream?ref=page_internal . Este centro, localizado num edifício modelar (um investimento de dez milhões de euros), funciona como um espaço onde são desenvolvidas diversas atividades criativas. No fundo, funciona como um espaço onde os alunos das escolas da cidade de Rezekne desenvolvem atividades extracurriculares, gratuitas, num ambiente de aprendizagem informal.
Denota-se que, no sistema educativo da Letónia, existe uma grande valorização da formação artística dos alunos, nomeadamente em áreas como o canto, a dança e a música. No entanto, neste centro são desenvolvidas outras atividades, como trabalhos manuais com madeira e cerâmica, atividades desportivas, costura e culinária. De referir que a escola que visitámos tem a funcionar quatro grupos de dança e folclore e vários grupos corais organizados de acordo com a idade dos alunos. Apesar de constatarmos não existirem grandes diferenças em relação ao nosso sistema de ensino, verifica-se uma forte valorização da componente cultural e artística. O sistema educativo letão aposta fortemente numa formação, de natureza não especificamente formal, dos alunos, que visa dotá-los de várias competências para além da aprendizagem formal.
No último dia, iniciámos uma série de atividades que nos permitiram usufruir da parte do programa dedicada a atividades de cariz mais cultural, desenvolvidas através do contacto com a exploração do meio local. Fomos visitar a cidade de Ludza, a cidade mais antiga da Letónia. Nesta cidade visitámos o centro de artesanato e duas igrejas, uma católica e outra ortodoxa. De seguida visitámos a cidade de Karsava, que fica localizada a apenas 13 Km da Federação Russa.
Todas as atividades desenvolvidas foram, certamente, enriquecedoras, uma vez que nos permitiram uma perceção de como outras escolas europeias estão organizadas, dos métodos de ensino usados e das atividades dinamizadas com os alunos. O programa de mais esta reunião de projeto permitiu-nos efetuar diversas aprendizagens e vivenciar novas experiências que alicerçaram o nosso processo de aprendizagem, sendo este o objetivo essencial do nosso projeto.
